[Harp-L] 5751
Interesting tube. It has the same gain factor as a 12AT7, which is 70, but
much more aggressive and musical. There are many NOS tube sellers, what
their terms are plus price are most important. If they wont take back noisy
tubes I wont buy from them. I test the whole lot when they come in.

That one's tough. I think my initial response would have been to knock the
guy out on the spot... However...
I'd love for that to happen and for me to be calm enough to play it cool
just until he started a solo and un plug

And TELLINGLY it's a well-known "blues traditionalist" who doesn't hate OBs
and famously did a tribute album to Little Walter. Talk about cognitive
dissonance for some of our more rusted on OB fans.
Unfortunately for Dennis Gruenling, the fact that he has learned every lick
in Little Walter's catalogue counts against him because, as an OB proponent
recently wrote on another forum, "Of course if you just sit around and copy
little walter licks then you're just a copy cat and not a musician at all."

Gary, I agree with you that the 5751 tube has great potential for harp
amps. It has been my favorite preamp tube for years. You can get a very
nice sounding NOS JAN Philips 5751 for about $20 from Tube Depot in Memphis
(or on their website). The tube has 70 percent of the gain potential of a
12AX7 and a very warm, musical tone. Good call.

Model 2 for a good quality mic or two.
(Feel free to make straight cash offers, but they'd have to be pretty sweet

Here's the deal: the amp is in REALLY good shape; there's a little bit of
the tolex at the bottom that's loose at a seam, but it's a small spot and
stable otherwise.
The amp has had a 3-prong cord professionally installed by a local amp
tech/custom builder. He really knows his stuff, and this amp is super-clean
and functions perfectly.
Anyone out there reading this who doesn't know about the legendary tone of
these little monsters can simply browse the list; I know I'm preaching to
the choir here.
The ONLY reason I might trade this amp (or sell it for a mic plus cash or
something) is because I have another amp that was modded by Gary Onofrio
(Sonny Jr) on its way
to my house as I type.
Anyway, I LOVE the sound of my Shure 533SA, so vintage dynamic mics with
volume controls will definitely be considered.
CR? CM? Probably not crystal or ceramic, as I cannot afford to trade the
amp
for a mic that could go kaput with one unfortunate drop.
The right vintage one, with big bottom end is a possibility if I can make a
deal and still have a good spare or two in my kit.

this was one piece of technique to work on for a total control of the
instrument.
Try to see how slow you can pulse - when you get it down to once/second,
it will reveal the muscles needed to accomplish a single pulse. Now, try to
focus on exactly only what is needed, eliminating any bundled habitual
extra musculature. With this understanding, next try to relax as much as
possible, minimizing the muscle impulses needed until it is as natural as
breathing. Then, rebuild, starting to increase your pulse speed slowly.
You may reach a ceiling to just how fast you can control the pulse. Don't
spend time trying to crash through your ceiling. Accept the fact that that
is your limitation at this point (sometimes the individual has a muscle
limitation - for instance, I can't sideways tongue switch very fast while
others are like machine guns). Then roll this into your technique to be used
w/out much effort and see how far you get creating your own sound.
You will find a measured controlled vibrato and also an unmeasured one -
both can be used effectively.
I find a slow measured one is very comfortable for me in a lot of cases
and works towards my individual sound.

For those of you who can do throat vibrato I have a question. As you know,
when playing a note or a chord with throat vibrato (TV), you play it with
a
'pulse' (a tempo) at which you modulate the pitch. Another way to say this
is that you cause the pitch to waver at a certain speed. And you also
probably know that the TV sounds more effective when you can control the
pulse so that this matches the tempo of the song you're playing.
So what I'm wondering is what kind of exercises I can do to develop a fast
pulse and more than this, to get any speed I want. On a song with a 4/4
time at a metronome tempo of 92 I can get a 16th note tempo. That's about
as fast as I can pulse TV. This sounds fast but it really isn't. It's not
that slow either and I can match TV tempos to a lot of songs up to that
speed. I'd like to be able to do it faster, maybe 16ths at 108 or 112.
Has anybody worked on this with drills and what not? Has anybody tried to
work on this specific thing as opposed to just developing greater speed and
control over time without conscious effort? When I try to get 16ths over
92
it seems like my muscles won't go any faster. Sometimes I wonder if this
is
some sort of set thing, like there's a threshold one can't get past.

I'm further impressed by M. Peloquin's revealing that his diatonic solo
w/pretty good OB's was due to the B-Radical reeds in his Hohner on that video
posted. I can only imagine these reeds in the body of the harmonica for
which they were designed and am awaiting my pre-ordered "D" harmonica.
