[Harp-L] AMP Education

If you are talking about tube amps, one of the best resources is

 http://www.kendrick-amplifiers.com

Mr. Weber has books and DVDs that teach tube amp. He has taught classes in remote locations but as I understand it he is now operating solely from his Texas location. He has a "build your own" amp class that teaches you from the ground up. His company builds a wide variety of both guitar and harp amps. One of his books is aimed at teaching the basics to guitar players so they can at least talk more intelligently to a tech. So basic your drummer can understand. He has an informative and entertaining email monthly.

I am trying to learn tube amps myself. I have acquired several books and DVDs from Ebay. I bought a tube tester and several inexpensive amps to play with. For me, handing a $35 tube amp has helped to understand, tube, sockets, capacitors (caps), resistors, filter caps, and a lot of the rest of the terminology. Google tube amp safety before putting your hand inside!

I also recommend looking for a forum or two that you can follow. Depending on your amp of choice, just Google and forums will show up. A lot of info free by following Google links.

So, are there any good resources
 for learning about amps?

Back when I was taking guitar lessons and just starting out playing in
a little garage band, I tried to do some research on amps - basic
theory stuff, kind of "what's the difference between this and that",
what to look for, how to set up, things like that...I had very little
luck finding any broad-overview resources.

I've seen a lot of discussion on the harp list about various amps, but
almost all of it is over my head - is there any kind of "amps for
dummies and idiots", very basic intro-level amp concepts resources,
something I could learn about from? Whenever I've tried to discuss
amps with others, I end up getting a lot of questions that make me
realize that I don't even have a basic vocabulary for different aspect
of the amp that I should know about...

Thanks!
Sean
