Re: Subject: [Harp-L] Danny Boy version

One of my favorite versions of this tune is on The Chieftans' "Tears of Stone". It features Diana Krall on vocals...unfortunatly it has a pretty lame backing vocal arrangement. Except for that, it's a gem.

"Danny Boy's" tune is the ancient Londonderry Air that has been used for many different lyrics. Not all of them are as somber as "Danny Boy"

See:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Londonderry_Air

e.g.
"Would God I were the tender apple blossom
That floats and falls from off the twisted bough
To lie and faint within your silken bosom
Within your silken bosom as that does now."
etc.

Hi Mick:

It's not too horrible...as long as one realizes it was purely done as a tip
of the hat to the show's host..Danny Thomas. But if one sings along - to
the extremely sad lyrics, then that upbeat big band tempo just doesn't
work at all! I'm dating myself too, though - I just gave the link a re-listen
and found myself appalled by this changing-up of what is supposed to be a
very somber, meaningful 'eulogy'. I guess I never paid attention when the
show was on, since it never sounded the same then to me as the 'real' Danny
Boy.

I've sent Randy a link to a vocal done by Declan Galbraith...a Scots-Irish
kid who's a huge hit in Britain. He recorded it probably around age 9.
He's just turned 18, so his voice might have changed by now. This is about as
'speeded up' as I personally ever want to hear Danny Boy ;) (Ymmv).

..now if only I could play my chromatic as well as this kid can sing ...sigh. :)

PS: as to how to respond offlist? I scanned your visible email address and
put it into the 'copy to' box in my email window. I get the list in Digest
form so the email addresses are visible. I'm unsure if those who get the
list other than in Digest form see them the same way. In addition, to ensure
it stays offlist, one has to type 'offlist' into the subject line.

version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeJhllk3m2c&feature=related.
Sorry,
I don't know how to reply to anyone offlist.
