Re: [Harp-L] Prices of Harmonicas

My first diatonic was purchased in 1952 for about $2.50 (military scrip), BUT that was in a px in Trieste Italy. So I wouldn't want to count it. On the other hand, a px seems to have always been around the same price as a discount volume dealer.
Around 1962, I seem to recall around $3.75
Around 1972, I seem to recall around $5.65
Around 1982, around $8.50
Around 1992, around $12-$13.oo
Around 2002, maybe $19-$20.oo
Now, I don't know, but seems to me that every ten years they seem to increase by 50%. Sooo, in 2012 they 'should' have been around $28.50
Ok, seems to me like someone (somewhere?) skipped a cycle and the current price at $43.oo is another 50% increase over what they 'should' have been. I can understand inflation, but some things (gasoline, cigarettes, coffee, homes) just sort of take off while others don't. Redi-mix concrete is still a bargain. We Italians are very keen on watching concrete prices.....lololo

So, I think a good diatonic should cost $28.50 and a good chromo should go for $95.oo.

Marine bands were $2.25 to $2.50 around the pacific NW up in to the early seventies. I still have boxes marked $2.25 in pencil from one of our long gone mom and pop music stores. JD
