It's a traditional chain-gang song. It means he died. In the traditional 
song the last verse is " Another man done gone down at the county farm - 
another man done gone". And I guess if you are not familiar with the prison 
program in the south - when you were convicted of a crime you were sent to 
the " Farm" where you performed manual labor chained to the other inmates.
