RE: [Harp-L] Sebastien Charlier on stage videos

Hi Iceman,

In fact, I am the guy on the video, trying to play Chet's solo :-)
I wanted to write the same explanations on all my videos, since I saw it on a Jazz pianist video and thought it was very interesting.
But it is quite long to do, especially because I have to write the tabs whereas I work on standard notation.
I'll try to do it once in a while anyway.
Thanks for the feedback :-)

Concerning Charlier, effectively, the very interesting thing about the Blues & Beyond Quartet is that they improvise on Blues chord changes.
So it is a good way to see how far one can go on a classic Blues, and then decide how far each one want to go.
At least, it opens a lot of new directions to be explored !
Personally I also love listening to this music, but at the end this is purely a question of taste.

Best regards,

Jerome

It is really 3rd position soloing. Very interesting approach. This is an example of ideas over a 12 bar format in which there are no wrong notes. Force of will puts it across. Charlier really takes it outside and moves ideas/patterns around chromatically as well as approaching the notes as more of a musician using a harmonica rather than letting the harmonica dictate the ideas.

Lots of fun. It doesn't resonate with all harmonica players or audiences, but is great if one is looking for more on challenging listening.

Here is another interesting video in which the player transcribes a Chet Baker solo. Chet would take it "outside" at times, but was more firmly rooted in melodic ideas in which the horn was an extension of his vocals. (Listen to recordings of his scat singing to get the idea).

This guy explains what is going on during the solo via text on the video.
