Agreed that working with a tuner vs a reference to match pitch is a great tool: tuners with pitch generators like the Peterson Strobotune do nicely if you prefer listening for beating instead of following a tuner needle or light.. 



That being said, in the end, the pitch tester that matters the most is the one between your ears, whether you are a singer, play non-fretted string instrument, or harmonica, as you internally adjust technique to produce the target pitch. I found this "adaptive pitch test" online to be very interesting and helpful in finding out how sensitiveÂone's auditory circuit is to subtle pitch differences: See this site and try the "adaptive pitch" test to see how your ear is for pitch:
