The claim is not very surprising - at least in the musical group setting.
One often wants to avoid stepping into the musical space of other
instruments. Therefore a pianist may need to keep the chord voices
he/she chooses confined to a particular region of the key board. Some
voicings sound more harsh than others - hence one possible source of the
pianist's claim.
