As a general rule I choose a position for a song  on how it lays out, 

and where the bends are, whether their pitchiness and timbre is a problem. 

How high or low I want the harps voice to be, and how well it emotes.  

 

As the tab for 12th position Hallelujah shows, you can play the entire
melody  between 4 and 7 

without having to bend, and the soul notes 4d, 5d, 6 draw all figure
prominently, and

my old 3rd position licks also work here for improvising

 

Hours and hours of happy experimentation on all the great melodies of our
time.

For instance:

4th Position for "Summertime," 

5th Position  on "Little Wing,"

12th position for "Fly Me to the Moon,"

1st Position "You Are the Sunshine of My Life,"

2nd Position for "Suzanne"

3rd for "Watermelon Man"

4th for "Knight of White Satin."

2nd for "In My Life"

 

 

I have used the Stnard for 20 years or more.  While it isn't perfect

It is the best solution I have found. It even has a volume control.  

 I like the cupped feature even when not plugged in, 

so I use it all the time, even when played acoustically.  

 

As you can see my embouchure is not what it should be,

but I've somehow learned to play from my throat, even 

though I am somewhat off the edge.

I use Rick Eppings HH01 rack, with knobs from a Kay Rack..
