I usually use screws without using a nut. I snip off the end of the screw 
(if it protrudes), so that the valve sits down on the reed plate without having the
screw pierce it.

The new Hohner Instant Workshop Toolkit has a set of pliers which have two
functions: (1) To remove rivets, and (2) To punch a small hole through a valve.
The Seydel deriveting tool does function (1) only.

In the Hohner repair videos that I've seen, there has not been a demonstration
on punching a hole through the valve. I'm not sure if the hole would be large enough
to fit over a star nut.
